Hawera High School Principal (Rob Hurley) announced at the Year 9 Information Evening (for year 8 students and parents) that all form classes would be mixed ability except one!
The Deputy Principal (Wendy Armstrong) later explained that a group of higher ability children would be invited to be placed in an accelerated class, which would include most subjects and that those with potential (not necessarily members of that class) would be able do some NCEA units in year 10. She also described how higher ability students will be challenged in all subject areas.
This is good news for:
- parents of higher ability students (and those students)
- those considering sending their children to out-of-town boarding schools
- parents of students who have potential but aren't achieving because they cannot match the very bright kids (so they don't try or don't ask if they don't understand), and those students
- teachers who have problems presenting their material (either boring the brighter kids by aiming at the middle range or loosing or confusing the middle range by pitching at the bright kids)
Thank you Hawera High!
