All our herbs are grown in 10cm black plastic pots and are $ NZ 2.00 each
unless specified otherwise. If buying by mail order, post and packaging is
extra. If something is not on the list, please ask, we may have it
or be able to grow it for you. We have access to a wide range of natives
as well as herbs and some perennials.
Basil - Ocimum basilicum - we have a range of basil varieties which will be ready late in Spring. They include the usual Sweet Basil, Purple Ruffles, a stronger Italian variety grown commercially for pesto and a Mini Basil ideal for the kitchen window sill or smaller spaces.
Borage - Borago officinalis - vigorous annual to 80cm with starlike blue flowers. It's loved by bees and self sows readily. Leaves and flowers can be eaten.
Catmint - Mepeta mussinii - a good edging plant with lavender coloured flowers and greyish blue leaves which together give a misty look. 20cm.
Chamomile (Roma) - Anthemis nobilis - used for fragrant lawns, our variety has pretty double white flowers which can also be used as a tea.
Chives - Allium schoenoprasum - a popluar culinary herb growing 25cm with pretty mauve flowers in summer.
Chinese or Garlic Chives - Allium tuberrosum - these have a mild garlic flavour and make a declicious addition to or substitute for the other variety of chives.
Cotton Lavender - Santolina chanaecyparissus - aromatic plant with coral-like silver foliage. It has yellow flowers and is also good near the sea.
Feverfew - Chrysanthemum parthenium - an attractive perennial reaching 60cm. Our variety has large clusters of double white flowers. The leaves are good for headaches.
Lavenders - Lavendula species
L. allardii - the largest growing of the lavenders, makes an attractive bush. 1.3m
L. dentata - a vigorous wind hardy plant which flowers prolifically all year. Ideal for hedges. Not so good for drying or scent. 1m.
L. angustifolia - True English Lavender - grown for its scent. all varieties can be used for drying and other herbal uses. There is a group of lavenders referred to as Lavendins that are actually a cross with L. angustifulia.
We have put these under English Lavender as these are also used commercially for dried flower and essential oil production. Quality of scent is similar but the Lavendins are more prolific. Most English lavenders grow to 60 - 80cm.
Grey Hedge - one of my personal favourties for strength of scent. Flowers prolifically over summer. 80cm.
Twickle Purple - has long deep mauve flower spikes and is ideal for dried flowers.
Seal - also has a strong scent and is very free flowering - up to 4 months. 80cm.
Impress Purple - strongly scented and more often grown for dried flowers.
Grosso - a strongly scented variety bred for essential oil production.
L. angustifolia alba - White Lavender - has all the attributes of English Lavender but has white flowers. 80cm
L. viridus - Green Lavender - so called because it has green flowers. An attractive and interesting addition to your garden.
Lemon Balm - Melissa officionalis - vigorous perennial to 60cm. Valued as a soothing tea and is useful in flavouring cooking.
Lemon Grass - Cymbopogon citratus - grwon commercially for lemon oil, it is an important ingredient in many Southeast Asian dishes. I like it with chicken and as a refreshing tea in the morning.
Marjorams - Oreganum species
O. vulgare - Oregano - widely used in cooking. Mauve flowers.
Greek White Marjoram - has a powerful scent and flavour which is delicious with tomatoes and other Mediterranean cooking. We sometimes use it instead of basil. White flowers.
Mint Marjoram - has a distinctive mint flavour.
Mint - Mentha species
Peppermint - M. piperita - makes a refreshing tea.
Applemint - M. rotundafolia
Eau de Cologne or Orange Mint
Rosemary - Rosemarianus officionalis Tuscan blue - vigorous hardy shrub with a range of uses.
Sages - Salvia species
Common Sage - S. officionalis - a favourite for cooking.
Purple or Red Sage - S. officionalis purpurea - also good for cooking but is slightly better for nedicinal uses than the common sage. Has striking red foliage and purple/blue flowers.
Pineapple Sage - S. rutilens - has a distinctive scent and flavour. Needs a place sheltered from bad frosts.
Thymes - we have a range of thymes.
Thymus citriodorus - Lemon Thyme - has a delicious lemon fragrance for cooking or herbal tea.
Thymus serpyllum - Spreading or Carpet Thyme - ideal for lawns or seats. Traditionally used in preference to other thymes for cooking and medicinal uses.
Thymus vulgaris - common thyme.
Porlock Thyme - an upright variety growing into a small bush of 30cm.
Pizza Thyme - a vigorous spreading variety growing to 25cm high. this is our personal favourite for cooking and consistent growth. Both varieties have deep pink flowers.
Silver Thyme - T. vulgaris "Silver Posie" - striking silver/white and green foliage with pink flowers. Also useful for cooking.
Thymus westmoreland - Chicken Thyme - vigorous spreading thyme with open form. Good flavour.
